Join the team that supports our library by selling donated books online.  A little of your time and effort can make a real difference to the library's programs and materials.

 

It's Easy to Help the Library

You'll work with other volunteers to get our books listed for sale on Amazon.  When someone orders a book, we create shipping labels and pack items for shipment.  You're part of a team, so it's an easy and fun activity.

 

We fit the tasks to your interest and experience.  Most tasks require some computer comfort, but things like packing don't require any computer experience.  You can volunteer a little or a lot with the Friends – we're flexible!

Listing Volunteer

Wednesdays from 1-3pm

The listing process is simple and all you'll need is a laptop. First check the condition of the book, DVD, or CD to make sure it's good enough to list. Then look up pricing information and ranking for the title on Amazon.com to determine whether it is worth listing. If the book can be listed, set a fair price based on the condition of the book and provide a short and accurate description.

 

Shipping Volunteer

Mondays at 2:30, Wednesdays at 1:00, or Fridays at 10:00

Help prepare books, CDs, and DVDs for shipment by printing packing slips (via Amazon.com), printing shipping labels (using shipping label software), finding the items, safely packaging those items to prevent damage, and then mailing them at the Post Office.

 

 

Frequently Asked Questions: Online Sales Volunteering

Q: Do I need to be a computer or Internet expert?

A: No, you don't need to be an expert.  Some people help out by packing books for shipment.  Other tasks require some comfort with computers, but not expertise.  We'll teach you the details.

 

Q: How often would I need to volunteer?

A: Volunteers typically come in once or twice a week on a regular schedule.

 

Q: How long is a volunteer shift?

A: It depends on the task, but normally a volunteer would give 2 hours or less each week.

 

Q: When would I be volunteering?

A: Because we ship books on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, some volunteers come in on those days.  But depending on your task, times are often flexible.  Most tasks are done Monday-Friday before 5 pm.

 

Q: Where would I be doing this?

A: The online sales team meets at the Mountain View Library in special "behind-the-scenes" rooms.

 

Q: What type of things would I be doing?

A: We have many different types of volunteer activities: creating shipping labels, packing, researching book prices, listing items on Amazon, repricing items on Amazon, etc.  We can always use help researching new technology for the online sales team.

 

Q: How does volunteering with the Online Sales team help the Library?

A: All proceeds from our sales go to the library through the Friends of the Library.  The Friends are the sole sponsors of the Children's Summer Reading Program and the Friends' Bestseller Collections of popular books and DVDs.  The Friends also help pay for other library books, materials, programs, and equipment.
